ABCD Immersion Training
This training is a 3-day intensive immersive experience into ABCD. You will learn about the principles and practices of ABCD through trainer input, dynamic group discussion and spending time in a neighbourhood where community led efforts are unfolding. You will interact with practitioners who are practicing ABCD and others that are reframing their initiatives through the lens of ABCD. The many activities over the 3 days, which include community treasure hunts, community BBQs, and visits to various community led initiatives, combined with the power of peer to peer learning make this an unforgettable learning experience.
To enable us to provide an authentic immersion experience we work closely with partners and local communities who are eager to host others that are on the journey of deepening their practice in ABCD.
What will you learn over the two days?
This workshop will:
- Give you an immersive learning experience in a living community where ABCD is being practiced.
- Accelerate real-time learning and internalise practices and techniques through dynamic feedback as you practise learning conversation, asset mapping and other ABCD tools for change that are integral to community work.
- Give you an understanding of the history of ABCD, relating it to your experience of community practice.
- Explain the 5 guiding principles of ABCD in both theory and practice.
- Identify the 6 building blocks of community building, exploring how these assets can be identified, connected and mobilised in the neighbourhood context.
- Share the 8 touch stones of community building, offering stories and examples of their application.
- Show the power of stories, and how other tools such as open space, world café, appreciative inquiry and time banking can complement ABCD community building efforts.
- Show how to use the ‘Good Life’ conversation to vitalise the way you work with people on a one to one basis.
- Use stories and case studies of ABCD in action from our Learning Sites, in the UK and around the world, to highlight effective practice.
- And be a fun and dynamic experience; trainers will actively engage with participants in activities and exercises that you can then use in practice where you live and work. There will space for one to one discussions between participants and trainers to ensure that everyone receives the time they need to think through how they can apply what they learn.
What will you be able to do after this workshop?
As with all our training at Nurture Development, this immersion experience brings together the ABCD Institute’s 30 years of community development research in North America, with Nurture Development’s 21 years of international research and practical experience of community building and pioneering approaches in other strength based work.
If you are an on the ground practitioner you will be able to more confidently support Asset-based community driven efforts at the neighbourhood level.
If you are working in a more person-centred way you will learn how to work with people and the community to increase their level of interdependency in community life.
