ABCD stands for Asset-Based Community Development and it refers to a type of community development based on the work of Professors Jody Kretzmann and John McKnight.
ABCD challenges the traditional deficit-based approach that tries to solve urban and rural development problems by focusing on the needs and deficiencies of individuals, neighbourhoods, towns, villages, schools etc.

We provide a range of training opportunities that can be tailored to any audience, typically we offer:

“Looking Back to Look Forward is the river running through John McKnight. It reminds us that when we are in flow, our activities and those of others, past and future merge into one. The world is made fresh and we are no longer as alone as we thought.”
- Al Etmanski.

Welcome to Nurture Development, where we seek to support communities to reduce institutionalisation and increase interdependency in community life.
We work using the principles and practices of Asset-Based Community Development, also known as ABCD.
“Without community, there can be no liberation”. Audre Lorde.
At Nurture Development we work with interested groups who want to learn more about ABCD through the delivery of:
– One or two-day ABCD workshops
– Masterclass
– Keynotes and presentations
– Stewardship Circle
Every community and partnership is different and we support you to take your learning off the page and develop living exemplars of ABCD in action through our:
– ABCD offer
– Face to face mentoring
– Online mentoring
We capture learning from what we do (process/outputs) and evaluate what is achieved (change, outcomes and impact).
Our approach combines participatory self-assessment that takes each context seriously.
We integrate quantitative and qualitative methods in a customised and rigorous evaluation approach.

ABCD demonstrates that local assets (people, physical assets etc.) and individual strengths are key to ensure sustainable community development, and that people have a life of their own choosing.
